A Community Hunger Banquet is an interactive event that simulates unequal distribution of food in a community. Attendees are randomly assigned to high, middle, or low income groups and experience different meals based on the group assigned. During the event, a group of panelists answers questions on a certain topic (food insecurity, food waste, etc.). This event is hosted every other year by the coalition and community partners. Container gardening offers a flexile, accessible way for Siouxland residents to grow fresh produce at home. The Siouxland Food and Nutrition Coalition offers a few container gardening classes every Spring at different locations around Siouxland. The coalition provides the education, supplies, and hands on demonstrations for each class. To learn more about container gardening classes contact Anais Mares.

Food Bank of Siouxland

The Food Bank of Siouxland is the main food supplier for nonprofit agencies in Siouxland, including food pantries and soup kitchens. They were established to provide a year-round source of food to these organizations. 

Currently, the Food Bank of Siouxland provides food to member agencies throughout 11 counties in the Siouxland area. These agencies are spread across our region — in Iowa:  Woodbury, Ida, Monona, Crawford, Plymouth, Cherokee, Sioux, and Lyon counties; and in Nebraska: Dakota, Thurston, and Burt counties.

What it is

How it Works

• The Match: Spend money using your SNAP EBT card on fresh produce and get a 1:1 match in Double Up Food Bucks.

• Daily Limit: You can match up to $15 free each day.

• Getting a Card: Sign up online through the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative Double Up Page or ask a cashier at a participating store to sign you up and give you a card at checkout.

Where to Use IT

Double up Food Bucks can be used at participating farmer's markets and grocery stores. You can use a location finder to find participating locations near you.

Did you know that if you have Medicaid you can get a FREE ride?!

This applies to only Molina and Wellpoint members and you must schedule transportation at least 2 days before you need it. Not all members are eligible. Check your eligibility with your provider before scheduling transportation!
