Building healthy eating and physical activity habits
The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAPSACC) program is an obesity prevention intervention that aims to improve the nutrition and physical activity environment, policies and practices of child care facilities.
Siouxland District Health Department provides technical assistance to child care centers and in-home providers located in Woodbury County that are interested in improving their nutrition and physical activity environment.
Several local child care programs have taken the necessary steps to improve their environment, policies, and practices with technical assistance from Siouxland District Health Department. All centers completed a self-assessment, developed action plans, and educated staff. Below is a summary of some improvements made at the child care centers.
- Provided more outdoor time
- Increased tummy time
- Increased physical activity time and provide adult led physical activity
- Offer onsite gardening
- Teachers/staff eat and drink same food and beverage as children during meals and snacks.
- Offer water breaks and bring water bottles outside.
- Provide staff professional development on children nutrition, physical activity, and outdoor play and learning.
- Created physical activity policy.
- Educate families on child nutrition and children's physical activity requirements.
