2012 County Health Rankings
More than 3,000 counties and the District of Columbia can compare how healthy their residents are and how long they live with the 2012 County Health Rankings, released today. The Rankings are an annual check-up that highlights the healthiest and least healthy counties in every state, as well as those factors that influence health, outside of the doctor's office. The Rankings highlight the importance of critical factors such as education rates, income levels, and access to healthy foods, as well as access to medical care, in influencing how long and how well people live. Now in their third year, the Rankings are increasingly being used by community leaders to help them identify challenges and take action in a variety of ways to improve residents' health.
Lead Hazard Control Grant
Siouxland District Health Department is partnering with the City of Sioux City on the HUD Lead Hazard Control Grant, which provides funding to make repairs to homes identified with lead hazards. Typical forms of assistance may include repair or replacement of windows, siding, or other components painted with deteriorating lead-based paint. Lead hazards present a significant health threat to people, especially children under the age of six.
The Lead Hazard Control Program is open to both owner-occupied and rental properties. To be eligible, a house must have been built prior to 1978, the residents must meet income guidelines, and there must be at least one child under the age of six residing in the property. For more information about the program, please see the program brochure. To begin the application process, please complete this preapplication and turn it in to Siouxland District Health Department.
HOPES Program Helps Empower Local Families
Siouxland District Health Departments HOPES program is a free, voluntary family support program that offers home visits for eligible families. We believe that a child'r first and best teacher is his or her parents. HOPES links parents to resources, monitors growth and development, and provides education and problem solving for local families. The goals of the HOPES program are to create healthy children, a positive family environment, and empower parents.
On Tuesday, February 26th an ad on the HOPES and Early Head Start programs will begin to air on Cable One channels. You can also check out the video on the SDHD Facebook page. Let us know when you have seen it on the air and feel free to share your HOPES stories with us on Facebook!
